Most consultants try to run both platforms at half-effort and wonder why neither works. The fix isn't “do both equally”—it's understanding what each platform is for, then putting your energy where it earns the most.

Different platforms, different headspace

LinkedIn audiences scroll with “is this relevant to my work” running in the background—they respond to frameworks, opinions, expertise. Instagram audiences are more visual and quicker to move—they respond to clarity, personality, save-worthy formats like carousels and short video. The same idea can land well on one and flat on the other.

Match the platform to your buying journey

  • If clients ask their professional network or check your credentials before reaching out—LinkedIn carries more weight.
  • If clients discover you through recommendations or want a feel for your work and personality first—Instagram carries more weight.

Most consultants already sense this about their own clients. The mistake is treating platform choice as preference instead of following where the actual decision happens.

One idea, two formats

Develop one solid insight each week, then adapt it—a plain-spoken LinkedIn post, or the same idea broken into an Instagram carousel. The thinking stays constant; only the packaging changes.

The call

If you can only commit real effort to one platform right now, prioritise the one where your buying journey lives, and treat the other as lighter and secondary. Splitting attention evenly, especially early on, usually means neither builds enough trust to work.
